Contactors suit high power commercial HVAC applications requiring on/off switching of high power loads and control of varying voltage over thousands of motor and compressor cycles. They receive a low voltage signal from the furnace and create a magnetic field by pulling down a piece of metal connecting the higher voltage sides, causing lower voltage and current to switch a higher circuit and power fan and compressor motors. A single pole contactor has one magnetic coil for one circuit and a double pole connects two circuits with two coils.
